General Biological

We are seeking a process development chemist to design, optimize, and troubleshoot reaction systems in our first-of-kind biomanufacturing pilot plant. Our ideal candidate has extensive experience developing separation processes for complex mixtures of small molecules. You should also be familiar with developing an executing analytical chemistry methods on HPLC, LC/MS, GC/MS, or NMR to rapidly assess and iterate through separation methods, and have some familiarity maintaining common analytical equipment. Familiarity with basic chemical synthesis techniques including but not limited to organic synthesis, crystallization, and metal catalysis is a plus. Additionally, familiarity with biological compound analysis (i.e., metabolomics) is a plus. You should have strong data analysis skills, or are resourceful enough to build pipelines for data from many different sources.

As GB pursues vertical integration, you will have exciting opportunities to contribute to end-to-end hardware, software, and process solutions. We are looking for someone who thrives on total task ownership, rapid execution, and interdisciplinary thinking.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize protocols to analyze compounds from our biomanufacturing process on LC-MS, GC-MS, NMR, and other techniques
  • Analyze time-series process data including data from analytical chemistry equipment to draw conclusions
  • Maintain, upgrade, and assemble analytical chemistry equipment: be a true custodian of lab assets
  • Contribute to the development of intellectual property by writing up novel concepts as invention disclosures and participate in the patent application process

Required Qualifications:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, or a related field with 2+ years of relevant experience in analytical chemistry or analytical process development
  • Strong background in analytical chemistry techniques
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome technical challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to execute complex projects and meet aggressive timelines

Additional preferred qualifications:

  • Prior experience with the design and development of protocols for fermentation analysis, especially related to metabolomics
  • Background in chemical synthesis: strong grasp of fundamental techniques including organic synthesis, crystallizations, metal catalysis
  • Hardware sensibility: you can build things with your hands, have no trouble getting hands-on to assemble, diagnose, and cobble together mechanical solutions
